Wonky Cross Prayer Quilt
Hello! I made a Wonky Cross quilt to be used as a prayer quilt. You can read about how I made it at my Sew Much and More page.
The teenage daughter of a gentlemen that I work with, was in a very serious car accident in December 2014. When she became more stable from being in critical condition for many weeks, the gentleman, the Dad, came into the office for a short period and I was able to ask if I could give her a prayer quilt and of course he said yes.
When completed, I took it to the office for co-workers to tie prayers into the quilt. It had it's own cubicle. An email was sent out and forwarded to co-workers.
The response was awesome! We left it at work for 3 or 4 days in order for co-workers to come and go as they please to say a silent prayer and tie a knot in the thread, so the sweet young lady could be covered in prayers.
It saddens me to say she could not be healed, but that she was healed when she took Jesus' hand earlier in July. I pray that when her parents and brother cover themselves with her quilt, they will find peace and comfort from the prayers tied into it.
Thanks for stopping by!

Repurposed jeans into an apron
Hello! I'm repurposing jeans into aprons! I make prayer quilts for my church prayer quilt ministry and am in need of raising funds! I'm making these aprons to help fund the ministry.
McCall's has a fantastic continous bias binding tutorial! I recommend watching the video, then when you're in need of a refresher you can skim through the provided text instructions.
It's a great way to use the donated fabric stash! The ticking fabric (shown in this photo) goes great with the jeans making a nice looking non-gender specific apron. The aprons may vary slightly depending on the jeans. It's quick (after I've made the binding) and easy - just what I need! I don't want to be distracted from making the prayer quilts but needed to pause to raise funds for the ministry... so I can make more quilts to sew to serve!
Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. This is the first time posting from my iPad so I hope it post ok!

A Prayer Quilt for a Super Hero
Hello and thanks for stopping by Sewing to Serve! This is a place to share sewing to serve projects, groups, and activities. I'll share what you and I are making to serve others with our sewing talents.
I was honored to present a prayer quilt to a super hero! What is a prayer quilt? It's a tangible way to cover someone in prayers. There are threads stitched into the quilt and left untied. You can make the quilt a tied quilt, but I like to machine quilt mine. The quilt is presented to the congregation and information about the recipient is given as to their prayer needs. After the church service the quilt is placed in an area large enough for people to get to all four sides. Each person says a silent prayer and ties a knot in the untied threads. Knots can be tied on top of knots (prayers on top of prayers). The recipient will then be covered in prayers and they know each knot represents a prayer for them. The prayers are not just from the church family. After the quilt is given to the recipent the family, care givers, and friends can tie prayers into the quilt. The quilt can be taken to the recipients church for prayers to be tied.
The superhero is a young man that lives down the street from me. He was diagnosed with an illness when he was 3 years old, he is now 10. His mother friended me on Facebook about a year ago because of mutual friends and that's actually how I met them. After reading the trials with his illness God put in my head to make him a prayer quilt. If possible, I like to make it at least a color the recipient will like. I briefly pondered what to make for this young man before realizing it was starring me in the face on Facebook.
The young man's Mom has this superman 'G' logo for his profile picture. Did you know there is a superman logo font for every letter in the alphabet? I didn't realize that nor had I thought about it! After searching the web, I saw a lot of pixelated images and decided to pixelate a superman 'G' logo quilt.
I went to work with graph paper and colored pencils. My youngest son, J2, helped tweak the final design.
Then I went to work cutting out squares:
and added the turquoise
and sewed the strips together
and here is the quilt without the threads stitched in for tying prayers. I added red #5 Pearl Cotton in the red areas and yellow #5 Pearl Cotton in the yellow areas.
It was an honor and pleasure to make this quilt and present it to the young man.
Thank you for stopping by! I look forward to hearing about your sew to serve projects.
Blessing!

Sewing to Serve
Hello and welcome to Sewing to Serve! This is a place to share sewing to serve projects, groups, and activities. I'll share what you and I are doing to serve others with our sewing talents.
In September 2014, my sisters and Mom got together for a week for our second fall sewing retreat. There are five of us in four states (Louisiana, Texas, Georgia and Arkansas), so it's a blessing we could sync our schedules to meet at my Mom's house for the retreat. You can read about it here.
I challenged everyone to participate in the Tie One On Day for a sewing to serve project. Do you know about Tie One On Day? In summary, you make (or purchase) an apron; wrap a baked item in the apron and give it to someone the day before Thanksgiving. You can learn more information about it here.
On our shop hop day during the retreat, we purchased fabric for the aprons and reserved one day to make them. We made the reversible Church Ladies' Apron by Mary Mulari. I love this apron pattern! We had fun picking out the fabrics and all of us sewing them as a group.

This is the other side:
From left to right is my sister Rhunell, me, my sister DeAnna, my Mom, and my sister Simone.
Thank you for stopping by! I look forward to hearing about your sewing to serve projects! I am humbled to glorify God by using my sewing talents to serve. This is not about the attention being on me to say 'look at what I did' .. my prayer and purpose of the blog is that we will inspire each other to serve and to serve more often.
I wish you many blessings in 2015!
Gina
